Vasquez Rocks, Southern California is the site of numerous movie and commercial projects… Famously as a location where Star Trek’s Captain Kirk battled the Gorn to save his crew. You can purchase prints of these here.

The nicest place to kill yourself I have ever seen… rock climbers… it’s not a matter of if… it’s when…
Hopalong, Tonto, Roy and Trigger, Iron Man, Gene Autry, and hundreds others rode the old west in them thar hills…. Now you just drive along “movie road” and squint a bit to relive the good guys in the white hats days….
After some record rainfall over the winter I though I should get down there to see the flowers and other famous items. Good news… lots of flowers in vast gravel pits to the south of Furnace Creek. Bad news… racetrack rock trails erased for the most part… plus some assholes are stealing the rocks that have been there for hundreds of years making the trails. I need to revisit my 1998 trip with my new film scanner to pick up some more photos I have not been able to post since they are on 4×5 and 21/4 film plus a few 35mm kodachromes. Enjoy. This is a giant place and I don’t think 10 more trips would cover it. Maybe again in late September?
Nothing like a fresh coat of paint… sun… and 25ºF.
It’s about 7:08AM in January. This entry is about the first 120 minutes of light in Yosemite.
Being the lazy bastard my friends know me to be, I kind of like winter because the best photo time of day (sunrise) comes late in the morning… even at 5000 feet elevation.
